NRA Civil Rights Defense Fund Scholarship

NRA Civil Rights Defense Fund Scholarship
The NRA Civil Rights Defense Fund Scholarship consists of annual writing contest for students at the elementary, middle school and high school levels. Sponsored by the National Rifle Association of America (NRA), the contest requires students to write a 1,000-word essay based on topic that is usually related to the United States government.

Essay submissions are judged in two categories: Senior (grades 10-12) and Junior (grades 9 and below), with separate cash prizes awarded to the winners in each category. First place cash prizes are $1,000, $600 for second place prizes, $200 for third place prizes, and $100 for honorable mention. Winners will have their names published in the NRA InSights publication.

All essays should be about 1,000 words, neat, and legible. They will be judged on originality, scholarship (including works cited) and presentation (including grammar and spelling). Applicants must include their name, age, address, telephone number, school and grade on the essay. They must also submit an endorsed statement from a teacher or parent to confirm that the essay is original work, and not plagiarized.

The NRA Civil Rights Defense Fund was established by the NRA Board of Directors in 1978 to become involved in court cases establishing legal precedents in favor of gun owners. To accomplish this, the Fund provides legal and financial assistance to selected individuals and organizations defending their right to keep and bear arms.

The deadline for this scholarship is usually in DECEMBER of each year, and the award amount is usually $100 - $1,000.
