The Truman Scholarship

The Truman Scholarship
The Truman Scholarship is a competitive, national scholarship for college juniors who are U.S. citizens or U.S. nationals in college full time pursuing a career in government, non-profit, education or public service. Over 60 scholarships are awarded each year.

It is sponsored by the Harry S. Truman Scholarship Foundation, named after the 33rd U.S. President Harry S. Truman. Established in 1975, the foundation supports President Truman's strong belief in the value of education and public service. The scholarships are awarded to students interested in serving in public office, as public defenders and leaders of non-profit organizations and as educators.

Students applying for the prestigious Truman Scholarship must have excellent grades, demonstrate activity in student government, have leadership capabilities, must be interested in graduate studies, and must commit to work in public service for three of the first seven years after completing a Foundation-funded graduate degree.

Eligible students must be nominated by their undergraduate college or university. Some colleges require application in the college sophomore year. Interested students should check with their university as soon as possible for deadline and application information.

The deadline for this scholarship is usually in FEBRUARY of each year, and the award amount is usually $30,000.
