Career fields can include research, regulatory work, quality control, or teaching in an area related to some aspect of foods, drugs or consumer product safety. A grade point average of 3.0 or above is required.

In addition to completing the scholarship application, eligible students must include a one page biographical sketch, an essay explaining why they chose their field of study, and describe their career plans for the future. Two letters of recommendation from college faculty are also required.

The scholarships are sponsored by the Association for Food and Drug Officials (AFDO), an international non-profit organization whose goal is to maintain uniform laws that regulate food, drugs and consumer products. Their close work and interaction with regulatory officials and consumer organizations has resulted in streamlining laws at the local, state and federal levels.

The deadline for this scholarship is usually in FEBRUARY of each year, and the award amount is usually $1,500.
