Participating colleges are located in over 30 states, with a total of 169 participating partner colleges. Graduating high school seniors or home-school students are eligible to apply as long as they are first-generation students in their family to attend college.
Students must demonstrate financial need and also show a strong interest in their communities through volunteer work. In addition, they must have excellent communication, writing and leadership skills. Scholarship recipients will be able to contribute information on their college experience by writing blogs on the I'm First blog site.
The scholarship is sponsored by the Center for Opportunity, a non-profit organization located in Bethesda, Maryland, who helps first-generation students attend and graduate from college. In addition to scholarships, the organization provides a blog site as a forum for students to encourage one another and share their college experiences.
The deadline for this scholarship VARIES each year, and the award amount is usually $2,000.
