National Merit Scholarship Program

National Merit Scholarship Program
National Merit Scholarship Program accepts candidates with high academics who score highly on the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. Approximately 8,000 students are selected each year to receive a Merit Scholarship award.

Students begin by taking the PSAT/NMSQT test in grades 9 - 12. Their test scores determine if the student meets the requirements to participate in the National Merit Scholarship Program. From all applications, 50,000 will be chosen to enter the program as either a Commended Student or Semifinalist.

Semifinalists proceed to the next level where 15,000 finalists will be chosen. Approximately 8,000 students are selected from this group to receive a Merit Scholarship award. The award is very competitive, attracting approximately 1.5 applications each year.

Merit Scholarship awards are funded by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) as well as corporations, businesses, company foundations, professional associations, and colleges and universities. NMSC is a non-profit organization that has been recognizing talented high school students and sponsoring college scholarships since 1955.

The deadline for this scholarship is usually in SEPTEMBER of each year, and the award amount is usually $2,500.
