The Henry and Joyce W. Sumid Scholarship

The Henry and Joyce W. Sumid Scholarship
The Henry and Joyce W. Sumid Scholarship is available to high school seniors, undergraduate and graduate college students interested in studying theater arts. It is for students living in the states of Alaska, Arizona, California, Hawaii, Idaho, New Mexico, Oregon, Utah and Washington.

Eligible students must have a grade point average of 3.0 or above and demonstrate financial need. To apply, students need to submit a transcript of grades, a resume, and complete an essay of 500 words or less on why they deserve this scholarship. Three letters of recommendation are also required, one of which needs to come from the student's theater instructor.

The scholarship is offered by the Pasadena Playhouse Alumni & Associates, founded in 1953. It is the giving arm of the Pasadena Playhouse. The Playhouse has been honored over the years with famous actors like Raymond Burr, Dustin Hoffman, Gene Hackman, and Sally Struthers all of whom trained at the school.

The scholarship is named after Henry and Joyce Sumid. Henry graduated from the Pasadena Playhouse College of Theatre Arts in 1940 and donated money to the college so other theater students could receive financial assistance to pursue their career goals in theater and the arts.

The deadline for this scholarship is usually in FEBRUARY of each year, and the award amount is usually $5,000.
