The scholarship is based on volunteer community service through an AmeriCorps community service program. Young adults who have spent 1-2 years in community service are eligible to receive a scholarship. Only community service with the AmeriCorps programs is required; academic records are not considered.
The scholarship award may be used for educational costs at eligible post-secondary educational institutions, including technical schools and GI-Bill approved educational programs. It can also be used to repay qualified student loans. Recipients have 7 years to use the awards.
The scholarship is offered through the Corporation for National and Community Service, a federal agency that helps more than 5 million people in the U.S. help their fellow citizens through volunteer service. The award honors Eli Segal who was a leader in national service and served as the first CEO of the federal Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS).
