Five scholarships are awarded every year. Selection is based on academic achievement, work experience related to occupational health and safety, and professional goals that relate to the applicant's desire for a career in occupational health and safety/industrial hygiene.
Eligible students may apply online before the deadline. Along with a completed application, candidates need to include a cover letter explaining how the scholarship will help them achieve their career goals. In addition, two letters of recommendation are required. Students should also include any honors and awards they have received and any related work experience and other activities.
The scholarship has been awarded since 1986 by 3M's Personal Safety Division. The 3M Company produces more than 55,000 products, including: adhesives, abrasives, laminates, fire protection, dental products, electronic materials, medical products, car-care products and electric circuits. The company has operations in more than 65 countries. 3M was founded in 1902 and is headquartered in St. Paul, Minnesota.
The deadline for this scholarship is usually in MARCH of each year, and the award amount is usually $5,000.
