Stephen Phillips Memorial ScholarshipThe Stephen Phillips Memorial Scholarship aims to help high school seniors who live in the New England area to pay for college. The award is renewable for up to four undergraduate years provided a GPA of 2.5 is maintained and financial need does not change substantially.

Applicants must be entering college, and must be permanent residents of Connecticut, Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, or Vermont. The scholarship can only be used for undergraduate study and are limited to those seeking their first bachelor's degree.

Named after Stephen Phillips, of the prominent Phillips family in Salem, MA, the program has given away more than $40,000,000 in scholarships to over 2,5000 students across the country. The family was well known for their active involvement in the merchant sailing era of Salem that followed the American Revolution.

However, with the sale of their last ship in 1845, the Phillips turned to political, philanthropic and educational endeavors. Stephen and his wife Betty took a great interest in helping students obtain a college education. After his death in 1971, a scholarship fund in his name was set up.

The deadline for this scholarship is usually in APRIL of each year, and the award amount is usually $3,000 - $10,000.
