HESC NYS Memorial Scholarships provide financial aid to the children, spouses and financial dependents of deceased firefighters, police officers, and emergency medical service workers who died as the result of injuries sustained in the line of duty. Funded by the Higher Education Services Corporation (HESC), this scholarship is only eligible to families are who are living in the state of New York.
Applicants must be studying at an approved postsecondary institution in the state of New York; must have graduated from high school in the United States; must have earned a GED; and must be enrolled as a full-time student taking 12 or more credits per semester. In addition, applicants must demonstrate that they are in good academic standing, and must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
The scholarship awards must be used to cover the costs of college. This includes tuition (up to 4-5 years of full-time undergraduate study); room and board and allowances for books, supplies and transportation; and residence expenses on campus.
If approved, the award payment will be sent directly to the student's school upon certification of eligibility and submission of appropriate financial aid applications. If the student is also receiving other scholarships and grants from other sources, this may reduce the amount of the NYS Memorial Scholarship award that the student qualifies for.
The deadline for this scholarship is usually in JUNE of each year, and the award amount is usually UP TO $10,000.
