Jacob K. Javits Fellowship Program

Jacob K. Javits Fellowship Program
The Jacob K. Javits Fellowship Program offers annual fellowships to students who are studying arts, humanities, and social sciences at the doctoral and Master of Fine Arts level. Funded by the U.S. Dept of Education, whose mission is to promote student achievement and preparation for global competitiveness, the program is limited to U.S. citizens or nationals and permanent residents.

Since 2001, the program has awarded hundreds of thousands in funding to students, but applicants must be able to demonstrate a superior level of excellence in academics, must have a financial need, and must complete a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) - which is required as part of the application in order to complete the financial need calculation.

Social work and clinical psychology are not eligible fields of study, but students who are currently receiving financial aid in the form of federal student loans are eligible to apply. In addition, it's very imperative that all materials are submitted only in the formats specified in the application.

The selection process involves a board that establishes the general policies for the program, selects the fields in which fellowships are to be awarded, and ultimately appoints the distinguished panels that will select the winners.

Depending on the availability of funds, a winning fellow will receive the Javits funding every year for up two years or the completion of their degree. The fellowship consists of an institutional payment (accepted by the institution of higher education in lieu of all tuition and fees for the fellow), and a stipend (based on the fellow's financial need as determined by the measurements of the Federal Student Assistance Processing System.

The deadline for this scholarship is usually in OCTOBER of each year, and the award amount is usually $30,000 - $45,000.
