Lockheed Martin Freshman Scholarship

Lockheed Martin Freshman Scholarship awards are targeted toward women who are pursuing a degree in engineering. The program is for incoming freshmen women only who have a grade point average of at least 3.5. Students must be accepted in a four-year accredited institution and majoring in engineering or a computer science degree program.

Lockheed Martin is a global security and aerospace company of 120,000 associates worldwide and headquartered in Bethesda, Maryland. They produce advanced technology systems, products and services. One of Lockheed Martin's strategic focus areas is to support further education in the areas of science, technology, engineering and math.

The Lockheed Martin Freshman Scholarship is sponsored by the Society of Women Engineers (SWE). SWE helps women preparing for careers in engineering, engineering technology and computer science with financial assistance for college.

SWE was established in 1950 to support women in the engineering industry. It is now a global organization with almost 20,000 members. Their goal is to increase the number of women engineer graduates from 18% to 30% by the year 2020. In 2011, SWE awarded scholarships totaling $540,000.
