Golden Apple Scholars of Illinois is looking for bright students pursuing careers in education and who are willing to attend college at a participating school in Illinois and commit to teaching at one of the Illinois high-need schools for five years.
The scholarships are open to students living in Illinois. Criteria for eligibility includes a grade point average of 2.5, full-time enrollment at a four-year college or university in Illinois, U.S. citizenship, and participation in four Summer Institutes where they will learn how to teach at challenging schools.
The definition of high-need schools are those that are in need both economically and academically. The purpose of the Summer Institutes is to give Golden Apple Scholars intense classroom training and preparation for teaching in schools of need.
The scholarships are renewable and increase in amount in the junior and senior years of college. In addition, students receive a stipend for each of the four years spent at the Summer Institute.
Golden Apple is a non-profit organization that supports excellence in teachers in the state of Illinois. Each year, Golden Apple awards 100 - 150 scholarships to outstanding students who want a more challenging environment in which to teach and an opportunity to change the lives of their students.
The deadline for this scholarship is usually in NOVEMBER of each year, and the award amount is usually $2,000 - $5,000.
