The Udall Scholarship rewards undergraduate students who are pursuing careers in the environment, tribal public policy, or Native American health care. College sophomores and juniors are encouraged to apply.
Students must have a grade point average of 3.0 or above and also demonstrate their interest in improving their communities by taking an active role in volunteer work. Fifty scholarships are awarded every year.
Three scholarship areas are available. One is for students desiring a career in environmental affairs and majoring in engineering, science, education, urban planning and renewal, business, health, justice, economics, and other related fields. Another scholarship is for students pursuing careers in law, education and other areas affecting Native Americans. A third area is focused on health care for Native Americans and can include health care administration, social work, medicine, dentistry, counseling, and research.
The scholarships are offered by the Morris K. Udall and Stewart L. Udall Foundation. The foundation was established by Congress in 1992 to increase awareness and stress the importance of the environment's natural resources. The foundation is named for Morris and Stewart Udall who served many years in the House of Representatives.
The deadline for this scholarship is usually in MARCH of each year, and the award amount is usually $5,000.
