The scholarship is a full-tuition scholarship and also includes a stipend to assist with living costs and an allowance for books. Law students interested in applying should plan to take their required LSAT pre-entrance exam prior to the February deadline for application submission.
There are no specific minimum test scores for eligibility. However, students applying must have high academics, ranking in the top 25 percent of their class. They must also be active in extracurricular school activities as well as in their communities. A total of 20 applicants will be chosen and invited for face-to-face interviews with the foundation selection committee.
The foundation was created by former Congressman Hatton W. Sumners in 1949 and is a non-profit organization based in Dallas, Texas. The purpose of the scholarships are to foster excellence among law students and encourage a sense of commitment to improve their communities. Providing full scholarships enables students to focus on school and community service, which are two important fundamentals of the program.
The deadline for this scholarship is usually in FEBRUARY of each year, and the award amount VARIES.
