Taste of Soul Verizon Scholarships
Taste of Soul Verizon Scholarships are offered to high school seniors who plan to attend full-time a four-year college or university or a community college. Eligible students must be committed to providing outstanding community service and leadership in the areas of education, healthcare, domestic violence prevention or sustainability.

Students must have a minimum grade point average of 2.5 and complete a 500-750 word essay on the subject of community service. The essay must explain how important community service is to the student and what they have done to serve their community during high school.

To apply, students must submit a completed application, along with a resume and two letters of recommendation. One of the letters must be from someone who can vouch for the student's involvement in volunteer service within their community.

The scholarship is sponsored by Bakewell Media's Taste of Soul in partnership with the African American Unity Center, a non-profit organization that helps improve social and economic conditions for families in southern Los Angeles. Taste of Soul is a popular, annual food event featuring African-American foods which was founded by Danny Bakewell, President of the National Newspaper Publishers Association and President and CEO of Bakewell Media. The event draws over 250,000 people from across Los Angeles.

The deadline for this scholarship is usually in APRIL of each year, and the award amount is usually $500.
