Dr. Alma S. Adams Scholarships are awarded to full-time students pursuing careers in public health, communications, social work, education, liberal arts or related fields. They must have a strong interest in and a record of community service related to raising awareness of tobacco’s harmful impact.
Candidates must be pursuing either an undergraduate or graduate degree at an accredited college or university in the United States. Applicants must have a 3.0 grade point average and demonstrated financial need. They must also have a background of community service within an economically or socially disadvantaged community.
Priority is given to candidates who are from low-income communities, minorities (African American, Alaska Native, American Indian, Asian, Hispanic/Latino, Native Hawaiian, Pacific Islander), the Gay/Lesbian/Bi-sexual/Transgender community and other populations that have significantly higher than average rates of smoking.
The scholarship is offered by The American Legacy Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to preventing teens from smoking and encouraging smokers to quit. The scholarship is named after Dr. Alma S. Adams who served for six years on its Board of Directors.
The deadline for this scholarship is usually in APRIL of each year, and the award amount is usually $5,000.
