Matthew Shepard Scholarships

Matthew Shepard Scholarships
Matthew Shepard Scholarships are available to high school students planning to attend college who are academic achievers and active in service to the LGBTQ community. Two levels of scholarship awards are given each year.

Silver Scholarships cover four years of college at any college or university the student chooses. Applicants can also receive bonus awards for achieving qualifying grade point averages throughout college. The Gold Scholarship covers tuition, books and fees at one of Iowa's three state universities, including Iowa State University, the University of Iowa or the University of Northern Iowa. It also pays a bonus for applicants who maintain qualifying grade point averages.

Both scholarships also pay additional bonuses for recipients who choose to participate in summer internships. All applicants must have a grade point average of at least 3.0 to apply and be full-time students. Those receiving scholarship awards will also be required to participate in a pre-college mentoring program at the Eychaner Foundation College Prep Seminar.

The scholarships are offered by The Eychaner Foundation, a non-profit organization located in Des Moines, Iowa, that is committed to promoting tolerance and non-discrimination. The organization has awarded over $2 million in scholarships to deserving youth. The scholarship is named after Matthew Shepard, a member of the LGBTQ community who was the victim of a hate crime that claimed his life in 1998.

The deadline for this scholarship is usually in MARCH of each year, and the award amount is usually $9,000 - $40,000.
