Star Fellows receive an opportunity to intern for a female Member of Congress. They are given a stipend for living expenses and fee housing on Capitol Hill. They will receive mentoring from high-level political representatives, seminars and learn from successful women in politics. They will also have a chance to explore Washington, D.C.
Candidates are chosen according to their academic achievements, motivation, extracurricular activities, and leadership capabilities. Applicants should have a strong interest in politics. Prior leadership positions and an interest in running for elected office are a plus.
The Running Start/Walmart Star Fellowship Program began in 2009 and since then has placed deserving young college women in the offices of more than 35 Members of Congress. Running Start was founded in 2007 to support young women interested in politics and in shaping the future of tomorrow.
The deadline for this scholarship is usually in APRIL of each year, and the award amount is usually $2,000.
