James "Rhio" O'Connor Memorial Scholarship Fund is open to undergraduate and graduate students who are attending colleges and universities across the U.S. Scholarships are awarded every month.

Students may apply for a scholarship by submitting a 700 - 1,500 word essay on the topic of cancer treatment, and the use of alternative therapies to treat cancer patients. All essays must be posted on a blog or website by the contestant, such as a university blog/webpage, or the student's own personal web site.

Scholarships can be used towards tuition and other college-related expenses. The scholarship is offered by Cancer Monthly, one of the fastest growing healthcare websites on the Internet with over 10,000 visitors each week. Cancer Monthly provides a free e-newsletter that provides information from cancer research specialists on various types of cancer.

The scholarship is named after James "Rhio" O'Connor, who was diagnosed with mesothelioma at the age of 61. Although given just months to live, O'Connor beat the prognosis and lived to the age of 69 by using alternative therapy treatments that included vitamins, minerals, a healthy diet of vegetables and fruits, and a determination to live. He even wrote a book entitled "They Said Months. I Chose Years! A Mesothelioma Survivor's Story."

The deadline for this scholarship VARIES each year, and the award amount is usually $5,000.
