Eligible candidates must be pursuing graduate studies in the social sciences and/or humanities, natural sciences and/or engineering and health. The scholarship is a 3-year, non-renewable scholarship. Up to 167 scholarships are awarded every year. Applicants are selected based on academic excellence, research potential, and leadership ability.

The purpose of the scholarship is to support students who demonstrate both leadership skills and a high standard of scholarly achievement in graduate studies in the social sciences and/or humanities, natural sciences and/or engineering and health.
The scholarship is funded by three federal granting agencies: Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC), and Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC).
The deadline for this scholarship is usually in NOVEMBER of each year, and the award amount is usually $50,000.
