The Henry David Thoreau Foundation Scholarship offers an impressive 4-year scholarship to 8-10 graduating high school seniors in Massachusetts.
Students must be graduating from a Massachusetts high school and entering college in an environmental major at an accredited institution.
Every year, eight to ten top-ranking high school seniors from Massachusetts who demonstrate the potential for environmental leadership and intend to pursue interdisciplinary environmental studies in college will earn scholarships for 4 years. Applicants must take at least 25 percent of their coursework in subjects related to the environment.
Applications are due every year in February and must be completed online. Scholarship recipients must maintain a GPA of 2.5 or above in order to receive scholarship funding for 4 years. Thoreau Scholars are also eligible for an environmental internship stipend, which usually takes place between their junior and senior year.
The purpose of the Henry David Thoreau Foundation is to encourage more students to invest in the future of our planet by becoming environmental leaders. The foundation provides scholarships and grants, and since 1999, has provided more than $6 million to support environmental work.
The deadline for this scholarship is usually in FEBRUARY of each year, and the award amount is usually $20,000.
