Golden LEAF Scholars Program is for students with financial need who plan to attend North Carolina colleges or universities. Eligible students must reside in specific rural counties that are tobacco dependent or economically distressed.
The awards are need-based scholarships of $3,000 a year each for four years of college for a total of $12,000. Students transferring from a community college are also eligible to receive a scholarship of $3,000 a year for three years.
The scholarship program is funded by the Golden LEAF Foundation, a non-profit organization that awards 215 scholarships a year. Since its beginning, Golden LEAF has awarded over 2,913 scholarships that have enabled financially needy students to attend college in North Carolina.
In addition to scholarships, the Golden LEAF Foundation has given hundreds of grants since 2000 to support programs that have a positive economic impact on North Carolina's distressed and tobacco-dependent regions.
The deadline for this scholarship is usually in MARCH of each year, and the award amount is usually $12,000.
