Portuguese Foundation Scholarship Program is open to U.S. students residing in the state of Connecticut who are of Portuguese descent. Eligible students must plan to enroll or currently be enrolled in a four-year college.
Students are selected for the scholarship based on academic performance and financial need, as well as school and community activities. Two essays are required. In the first essay, students elaborate on their financial need. The second essay asks students to describe their Portuguese ancestry and interest in Portuguese culture.
The scholarship is not renewable and can be used in the freshman, sophomore, junior senior or graduate year of college. Students must attend a four-year college or university and can be either undergraduate or graduate students. Full-time or part-time attendance is approved. A grade point average of 2.5 or above must be maintained.
The Portuguese Foundation was established in 1990 to preserve the heritage and further the advancement of Portuguese people in the state of Connecticut. The scholarship program began in 1992 and has awarded more than 122 scholarships totaling $167,000.
The deadline for this scholarship is usually in MARCH of each year, and the award amount is usually $5,000.
