Terry Fox Humanitarian Award

Terry Fox Humanitarian Award
Terry Fox Humanitarian Award is open to Canadian students who are planning to enroll in a two-year or four-year college or university. It is renewable up to four years of college.

Students must have a strong interest in humanitarian work and an interest in sports. Students or their parents must demonstrate experience in community service. They must continue to be active in community volunteer work throughout their four years of college.

The scholarship is named after Terry Fox who was diagnosed with bone cancer at the age of 18 while attending Simon Fraser University in Canada. After his right leg was removed, Terry began a Marathon of Hope run across Canada. The marathon was sponsored by the Canadian Cancer Society to raise funds for cancer research. He lost his battle with cancer in 1981 but his legacy remains and has been an inspiration to millions around the world.

In 1983 HBO produced a movie, "The Terry Fox Story," a made-for-TV movie about Terry's life. The Terry Fox Run continues to be held annually in Canada and cities around the world. Since its beginning, the Terry Fox Foundation has raised $400 million for cancer research. Terry remains a hero to millions of cancer victims.

In honor of Terry Fox and his brave efforts in spite of cancer, the scholarship foundation seeks to award students who, like Terry, have overcome obstacles in their life and are dedicated to the same ideals as Terry Fox in helping others.

The deadline for this scholarship is usually in FEBRUARY of each year, and the award amount is usually $7,000.
