The book is Atlas Shrugged, by novelist Ayn Rand. The Russian-American writer wrote two best sellers, The Fountainhead and Atlas Shrugged. To enter the contest, students must read the book and choose one of three essay questions to answer regarding the book. Winners include first, second and third prize winners as well as finalists and semifinalists.

Essays from 800 to 1,600 words will be judged on writing skill, original content and ability to clearly articulate the subject matter. Students must demonstrate an understanding of Rand's writings and philosophies. No application is required, and students worldwide may enter. Only one entry per student is allowed. Winners will be notified in November.

The contest is sponsored by the Ayn Rand Institute, a non-profit organization based in Irvine, California, that supports the works of novelist Ayn Rand.
