Writers and Illustrators of the Future Contest is open to anyone, and entries are accepted each quarter. Two contests are offered, one consisting of either writing short stories, science fiction or novels, and the other contest is for science fiction and fantasy illustrations.
Writers of the Future Contest accepts original writing up to 17,000 words in length. It is open to new writers interested in entering their work of a short story about science fiction or fantasy. The Illustrators of the Future Contest invites amateur illustrators to send in their best work of science fiction or fantasy illustrations.
Prizes are offered quarterly in each contest with three co-winners chosen each quarter in each contest. Winners will then be eligible for the grand price which is awarded once a year. Work is judged by professionals in each category but only amateurs and new writers or illustrators may enter the contest.
The Writers of the Future contest was established by L. Ron Hubbard in 1983 in order to discover and reward talented writers, and in 1988, the Illustrators of the Future contest began with the same goal to recognize talented illustrators. L. Ron Hubbard was a writer who wrote of his many travels and expeditions around the world, particularly from the late 1930's through the 1950's. Throughout his career, he wrote more than 260 published novels, novelettes, short stories and screenplays.
The deadline for this scholarship VARIES each year, and the award amount is usually $1,500 - $5,000.
