Swim with Mike Physically Challenged Athletes Scholarship is for athletes in high school and college who have life-changing disabilities caused by accident or illness. Applicants must plan to attend a four-year college or university.
Life-changing conditions can include paralysis, blindness, cancer, amputation, head injuries and other. The scholarship is for students who have participated in athletics in spite of their disabilities. Eligible students may participate in any number of sports, such as baseball, basketball, football, skating, swimming and diving, golf and many others.
The purpose of the scholarship is to enable physically challenged athletes to overcome their tragedies and realize their full potential to achieve a post-secondary education. The organization has raised over $14 million to sponsor scholarships for students with physical challenges.
The scholarship is named after a real person, Mike Nyeholt, an elite level swimmer who broke his neck in a motorcycle accident in 1981. In spite of his circumstances, he went on to achieve All American status, world ranking and three NCAA Swimming team titles at USC. He is Chairman of the Board of Swim With Mike and is personally involved in raising money for scholarships.
The deadline for this scholarship is usually in MAY of each year, and the award amount VARIES.
