The Thurgood Marshall Fund/ NBA David J. Stern Scholarship Program is open to any college student who is enrolled full-time at any one of the nation’s 4-year Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). Applicants must be at least at a Sophomore level in order to be eligible.
Applicants must have an interest in sport. They can major in any field they choose. All candidates must have a GPA of 3.0 or above in order to quality. The scholarship is renewable for up to three years of college. Scholarship awards are based on academic merit and financial need. Scholarship money may be applied towards tuition, fees, room and board.
Students may apply online by submitting an application, resume, grade transcript and a 500-word essay on the subject of teamwork and sports, and how the scholarship will impact the applicant's education.
The scholarship is offered through the Thurgood Marshall Fund and The National Basketball Association (NBA). The Thurgood Marshall College Fund is a Washington D.C.-based non-profit organization named after the first African-American Justice in the U.S. Supreme Court. It is the only national organization that awards scholarships, programs and other support to the 47 public Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). Since its beginning in 1987, it has awarded more than $200 million in scholarships and other assistance to its students and member-schools.
The deadline for this scholarship is usually in JUNE of each year, and the award amount is usually $10,000 - $30,000.
