David and Catherine Thompson Space Technology Scholarship is open to undergraduate and graduate students majoring in science or engineering programs related to aerospace. Candidates must be full-time students.

All applicants must be members of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics. A GPA of 3.3 or above is required. Students applying must have completed at least 1 academic semester of full-time college work and be enrolled in an accredited college or university within the United States or U.S. Territories. The scholarship is only for students studying a field to enter the Astronautics industry.

Sophomores and juniors applying for a scholarship may apply again in subsequent years. Application requirements include a grade transcript, 3 professional letters of recommendation, a description of all extracurricular activities, including high school, college and community activities, offices, awards, and work experience, and a 500-1,000 word typewritten essay.

The American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics is a professional society for the field of aerospace engineering. The AIAA was founded in 1963 from the merger of two earlier societies: the American Rocket Society (ARS), founded in 1930 as the American Interplanetary Society (AIS), and the Institute of the Aerospace Sciences (IAS), founded in 1932 as the Institute of the Aeronautical Sciences.

The deadline for this scholarship is usually in JANUARY of each year, and the award amount is usually $5,000.
