One student winner per year is chosen to receive a $250,000 college scholarship, a new $100,000 science lab for their school, and $50,000 for their teacher.
Applicants may submit a 3-minute video that explains a big idea in physics, mathematics, or life sciences. Videos are judged according to:
- how well it explained the subject matter
- how well it captured the viewer's interest
- creativity and innovation
- difficulty of subject matter
The scholarship is offered by the Breakthrough Prize Foundation, founded by Sergey Brin and Anne Wojcicki, Yuri and Julia Milner, and Mark Zuckerberg and Priscilla Chan. Since its beginning in 2012, the Breakthrough Prize has awarded close to $200 million to honor research in the fields of fundamental physics, life sciences, and mathematics.
The deadline for this scholarship is usually in OCTOBER of each year, and the award amount is usually $250,000.
